I talked to a friend on the phone last night. We belonged to the same support group when I was going through my depression. She told me last night “I remember that you were the only person who would sit at my table and eat lunch with me. You never talked to me and I know now that you weren’t able to talk during that time, yet you would occasionally give me a hug, still without words. Many times you would buy me a soda and go without one yourself. I have never forgotten those times, Joanne. I wasn’t able to hug you back, but O Joanne, it felt so good to get a hug”.
There were many years when I was unable to carry on a conversation. When someone asked me something, I would reply, but I never talked like I do now. My sister said one time “Talk to me. You used to talk all the time”. I told her that I didn’t know what to say. Sometimes we are unable to talk to people because of hurting so badly in our hearts. We can still convey to them that Jesus Loves them by reaching out and giving them a hug.
My friend told me last night as we were talking, “Everybody else in the support group, including the counselors would say kind and encouraging words to me, but you were the only one who showed me that I was somebody. Words don’t mean anything to me, Joanne. It’s what they do that matters to me. When I saw you taking money from your purse to buy me a soda, I knew that you didn’t have enough money to buy you one also, but yet you bought one for me. I remember and I will never forget that you put action in place of empty words”.
O friends, we need to understand that we can tell our loved ones all day long that we love and care for them, but if we never do anything to prove it, they are not going to believe us. Jesus put action to His Words when He told us that He Loves us. He hung on the Cross of Calvary to prove His Love to us.
If you are like I was and don’t know what to say, or are unable to say anything because you are going through a situation in your life where you just can’t talk, reach out and give your loved ones a hug. When is the last time you hugged Jesus? He isn’t here to hug, but when we hug one another, we are hugging Jesus and making His Heart to rejoice.
