QUOTATIONS - Part 1 |
Wm. McKinley On Bible and Good Citizenship "The more profoundly we study this wonderful Book, and the more closely we observe its divine precepts, the better citizens we will become and the higher will be our destiny as a nation." ----- William McKinley, (1843-1901) 25th President of the United States (assassinated) Victor Hugo On God and Death "Courage for the great sorrows of life, and patience for the small ones, and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace. GOD IS AWAKE." ----- Famous French novelist Victor M. Hugo (1802-1885) Dostoevski On Immortality and Love "If you were to destroy in mankind the belief in immortality, not only love but every living force maintaining the life of the world would at once be dried up." ----- Russian novelist, Fedor Mikhailovich Dostoevski (1821-1881) A THOUGHT FOR TODAY An ungrateful man is like a hog under a tree eating acorns, but never looking up to see where they came from. ---Attributed to Timothy Dexter CLEAR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "LOVE" AND "LUST" "Lust is getting something for nothing. Love is giving something for nothing." -- Dr. Ron Tottingham ABOUT THE TATTERED BIBLE The Bible that is falling apart usually belongs to a person who isn't! WHAT ABOUT HYPOCRITE EXCUSE? The man who says he is kept away from Church by
hypocrites is not influenced by them to stay away from anything else.
Business is full of them, but if he sees a chance to make some money, he does not
let this stop him from making money.
Society is crowded with them, and yet he never thinks of becoming a hermit.
Married life is full of them, but that does not make him remain single.
Hell is full of them, but yet he isn't doing a thing to keep from joining them there.
He wants to have you think he is trying to avoid contact with hypocrites; and yet he
takes not a single step toward the only place where no hypocrites can go -- HEAVEN. ON GOD'S WILL FOR MEN "The will of God for everyone is to read their Bible and pray everyday." --Dr. Ron Tottingham TESTING AMUSEMENTS PROPERLY Do they rest and strengthen, or weary and weaken?
Do they make resistance to temptation easier or harder?
Do they give inspiration and quicken enthusiasm, or stupefy the intellect and
harden the moral nature?
Do they increase or lessen love for virtue, temperance and justice?
Do they increase or diminish respect for manhood and womanhood?
Do they draw one nearer to or remove one farther from Christ?
WAKE UP -- YOU'RE DREAMING! "Wake up, old man; you're dreaming," yelled a
passerby to a converted drunkard who was testifying to the saving power of Christ in a street
meeting.
The converted drunkard's little daughter, standing nearby, pleaded thus: "O, please
sir, don't wake him up! Before he began dreaming, as you say, he would beat Mom and me,
and didn't provide for us. But now, since he has begun to dream, as you say, he is good
to Mom and me, and he brings home his money and provides for us. O, please sir, let him
dream on! Don't wake him up!"
DEACON TRUE SAYS -- If you are a Christian you can expect folks to
criticize, but you ought to live so nobody'll believe them." Not all who say, "Lord, Lord" are in the kingdom of God! Doubts are leaks that sink the ship of faith.
Some people are so anxious for others to shine that
they forget to put oil in their own lamps.
It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing
because you can only do little. Do what you can, with God's help!
The best way to bring up a child in the way he should
go is to go that way yourself.
It isn't necessary to blow out the other person's light
to let your own light shine.
The only way to be really free is to know and abide by the truth. It is much more important for a Christian to be a "GOOD SEPARATOR"
than it is for him to be a "GOOD MIXER." A young preacher was all up in the air because someone had lied
about him. He told another preacher he was going to make the person prove it. Said the friend,
"No, don't do that. HE WILL." If you train up a child to give pennies, when he is old he will not
depart from it. Absence makes the heart go wander. There is only one way to be certain of salvation. That is, to
receive the Saviour into your heart while there is time and opportunity, while His Spirit
still speaks to your heart! Seek Him NOW! SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT SERIOUSLY! When as a child I laughed and wept, time crept.
When AS A YOUTH I dreamed and talked, TIME WALKED.
When I became a FULL GROWN MAN, TIME RAN.
And later, as I GREW OLDER, TIME FLEW.
Soon I shall find while travelling on, TIME GONE.
Will Christ have saved my soul by then? Amen! I do not pray for a lighter load, but for a stronger back. Wise and strong is the person who can weigh the faults of others
without having his thumb on the scales. Happiness MULTIPLIES as you DIVIDE it with others! The greatest critics of any Church are those who do the least for
it. If you want your neighbor to know what Christ will do for him, LET
HIM SEE WHAT CHRIST HAS DONE FOR YOU! SOME REAL ODD BALLS! Recently we heard about a family which had not
missed Church in 23 years! What in the world is wrong with this family? Don't they ever have
company? Don't they ever have headaches or family reunions? Don't they have a favorite TV
program? NO, MY FRIEND, THERE'S NOTHING WRONG -- THEY JUST LOVE JESUS!!! THIS CHURCH CUSTODIAN IS A GENUINE
EXPERT ON CHILD PSYCHOLOGY!! Our Church custodian is a real GENIUS with children! It seems that five-year-old Butch O'Hara was on a hobby horse in our Church toddlers
section, and when the time came to go home, he wouldn't get off. His mother pleaded. The attendant pleaded. The Pastor came and applied what he called
"child psychology." NO RESULTS. That's when the custodian happened by. He walked over to Butch and whispered something
in his ear. Butch got down off that horse instantly, took his mom's hand, and started homeward. "Whatever did you say to him?" the Pastor asked. Replied the custodian, "I just leaned close to his ear and said, 'If you don't get
off this horse in five seconds, I'm going to slap you off.' " -- from "The Message" The value of a life is not measured by what has been accumulated, but rather by how
much has been given. THE PREACHER ALWAYS HAS A GOOD TIME The preacher has a good time. If his hair is gray,
he's too old. If he is a young man, he hasn't had enough experience. If he has ten children, he has too many. If he has none, he isn't setting a good example. If his wife sings in the choir, she is presuming. If she doesn't, she isn't interested
in her husband's work. If the preacher uses notes, he is a bore. If he speaks extemporaneously, he isn'
t deep enough. If he stays at home in his study, he doesn't mix enough with the people. If he
calls on some poor family, he is playing to the grandstand. If he calls at the home
of the wealthy, he is an aristocrat. Whatever he does, someone could have told him how to do it better. |
