WALK AS CHILDREN OF LIGHT - 2
Ephesians 5:8
Walk as children of light", Ephesians 5:8
It is clear that there IS criteria (an established principle, law, or rule) involved
in the "walk" called for. A sampling of Bible verses makes clear the nature of this 'rule'
we are bid to follow: ". . . every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even
as he is pure.", I John 3:3. (the word "he" most surely refers to Jesus). The apostle
John's understanding of a proper walk: ". . . I rejoice greatly, when the brethern came
and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. I have
no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth." 3 John 3-4.
In the apostolic days, before the Bible was compiled, the spoken word of truth and
the examples of the apostles served as a guide to the Christians. Philipians 4:9: "Those
things which we have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me (Paul), do
and the God of peace shall be with you".
The criteria which the New Testament church is instructed to give to the believers
in Jesus, is given in Matthew 28:19-20. In verse 20 they are to teach them to observe
all things which Jesus commanded them. The word "observe" is elsewhere translated as
"hold fast, keep, preserve". This word "commanded" means He has given charge, or enjoined
them to teach. The "all things" has to do with the substance they are to teach. The
teaching, observing, and being obedient to the faith is like a three strand rope. Jude 3
cautions that we ". . . should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered
unto the saints." (saved ones).
Paul said "preach the word", 2 Timothy 4:2. See also, I Peter 1:25: "...word of
the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto
you." DDH
